Child Life Child Life is devoted to helping children continue their emotional and social development while in the hospital; services offered include: • • • • •

Playrooms- They are located on several floors, and activities are organized daily for children. Activities- Activities for patients are offered year-round, and special activities are held during the holiday season. Parent help- Child life specialists can give you ideas about ways to help make your child’s stay easier. The staff can guide you with what to say to the siblings of an ill patient. Procedural preparation- The staff may take your child on a tour before surgery. This shows patients where their procedure will take place, where they will wake up, and what they might expect to see while they are here. Medical play- Child Life specialists can explain a child’s illness in terms children can understand and also assess how a child is adjusting to illness through “medical play”. Medical play encourages children to explore medical equipment with a doll or stuffed animal.

Concierge The Guest Relations Concierge provides general hospital information for visitor and phone inquiries received at the information desks located throughout the hospital. Lactation Rooms

Support for mothers who are breast feeding is also available. Please let your caregiver know.

Language Access Services

Children's Medical Center recognizes the need to provide interpretation services to facilitate communication with families and staff. This service adds comfort and understanding and is free of charge. Please inform your caregiver if these services are needed. The Language Line is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To contact Language Access Services, dial extension 65765 or call 1-888419-0167.

Pastoral Care

Pastoral Care chaplains are professional ministers who provide a listening presence and offer spiritual support, comfort and guidance for patient family members. Chaplains make daily rounds and work as part of the patient care team. Pastoral care staff can offer: • Godly play- an age-appropriate method of ministry with children through the use of sacred stories and parable boxes. • Religious rites and rituals • Prayer • Emotional and Spiritual support during crisis or trauma • Pastoral support and active listening • Contact with your own clergy or spiritual leader • Worship services and devotionals The Haggerty Chapel is located on the Lobby Level near the Trains, and is open 24 hours a day for prayer and meditation. The schedule for service is: • Non-denominational Service: Weekdays at 11:45 A.M. • Non-denominational Service: Sundays at 11:00 A.M. • Catholic Mass: Sundays at 3:00 P.M. All services are broadcast on hospital TV Channel 12. A chaplain is available 24 hours a day. A patient can request a chaplain by dialing “0” for the operator and/or asking their nurse to contact one for them.

School Services

In-hospital school: Teachers are available to help children continue their schoolwork while in the hospital. To contact school services, dial extension 68114. School Consultation: Teachers are available to help patients transition back to school smoothly after hospitalization. This includes helping family members contact a school for class work, services or special arrangements that your child might need after hospitalization. To contact school consultation, dial extension 67733.

Tutoring- Volunteer tutors can help your child with school work while in the hospital. If your child would just like some help with homework or reading. To contact tutoring, dial extension 67733.

Security The Security department provides uniformed officer patrols throughout our campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The officers can assist with directions, escort you to your car and provide limited assistance with minor vehicle problems such as a dead battery or low tire. On-campus parking lots are equipped with emergency blue light phones to contact Security should you require assistance. The emergency blue light phones are easily seen in the parking lots throughout the campus. To report any unusual or suspicious activity, please call Security at 214.456.2889 immediately, if inside the hospital dial extension 62889.

Showers

Showers are located on the 5th and 6th floors for patient family use. Special electric plugs for hair dryers and other electrical appliances are located in these areas as well. If you need assistance in obtaining toiletries, please contact Social Services at extension 62300.

Social Services The Social Services department is here to assist the patients and their families. The staff is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is specially trained to provide the following services: • • • • • • • • •

Adapting to illness and hospitalization Crisis intervention Emergency transportation Financial Assistance Finding resources available in the hospital Individual and family therapy assistance Obtaining needed medical help when you get home Planning for your trip home Support groups and other services

Telephone Use: All patient rooms have a telephone available for use by patients and family members. Phones are also available at the information desks and other locations throughout the hospital for local calls. Internal Calls: To make calls within the hospital, you must dial the fourdigit extension. Local Calls: To make local calls, dial 9 plus the 10-digit phone number. Local calls are free. Long Distance Calls: To make long distance calls you may use a calling card. Additionally, if needed, you can contact Social Services to make a long distance call from their department.

Tobacco-Free Environment Children’s Medical Center is a tobacco free campus. Staff and Families are reminded that this means: • No Smoking in any Children’s structure or anywhere on the grounds • No chewing tobacco or snuff

Wagon/Wheelchair Checkout

Children’s Medical Center provides the use of wagons and wheelchairs for patients and their family members. Should you require the use of a wagon/wheelchair, please contact the nurse’s station on the floor where you are located or contact any one of the concierge desks. The Children’s Dining Car Cafeteria is located in the main hospital on the Lobby Level across from the B3 elevators. Hours of Operation are: 7 Days a Week

Starbucks

A Starbucks full service Cafe is located on the 4th floor of the Bright Building. Hours of Operation are: Monday-Friday 6:30 A.M.-5:00 P.M. Saturday & Sunday Closed

Room Service To make eating easier at Children’s parents and families have several options for purchasing food: Parent Dining Card: Parents may order room service meals using a Parent Dining Card. Cards costs $5.00 each, and must be purchased in advance from the cashier on the first floor in Admitting or in The Dining Car Cafeteria. Room Service Food Trays: Trays are available to parents and family who prefer to stay in their child’s room, except for the ICU rooms. A menu for room service can be obtained from the patient’s nurse. Orders can be placed to the number provided on the menu from 7 A.M.- 8 P.M. Please give the parent dining card to the food service person when your tray arrives. Room service food trays are complimentary for mother’s who are breast-feeding. Please let the nurse know if you are breast-feeding so the nurse can order a tray.

Gift Card: Patient families also may buy a Food Services Gift Card that works like a debit card and can be used for cash-free purchases in The Dining Car, but it won’t activate until the next business day. The Gift Card cannot be used to order room service meals.

Nourishment Rooms Inpatient floors have a kitchen located by the nursing station. Complimentary coffee, an ice machine, refrigerator, and microwave are provided for families. Families in regular inpatient rooms are welcome to bring food and coolers from home.

Ronald McDonald House is a short-term lodging facility for the families of out-of-town patients. The cost is $15.00 per day and room availability is based on a daily waiting list.
